DC Studios boss James Gunn has announced that Milly Alcock, known for her role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon,’ will take on the role of Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El in the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Gunn expressed his enthusiasm on Instagram, praising Alcock’s talent and her embodiment of the character as envisioned by the creators.

The film, part of the larger DC Universe (DCU), also features David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and more. Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl explores the character’s unique background, having witnessed the destruction of her world before coming to Earth.
Warner Bros. is currently in search of a director for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” inspired by the comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The story follows Supergirl on a mission for revenge, teaming up with a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry child in a space journey that challenges them to their core.

The film aims to highlight the contrast between Superman and Supergirl, emphasizing their distinct upbringings and experiences. Gunn, in a presentation last year, highlighted the differences between the characters and their paths to becoming heroes.
This announcement comes amidst other changes in the DC Universe, with Henry Cavill no longer portraying Superman, and various shakeups in DC Studios projects. Sasha Calle played a version of Supergirl in last year’s ‘The Flash,’ continuing the legacy of actresses like Helen Slater and Melissa Benoist who previously portrayed the iconic character.
